Gearbox’s acclaimed action RPG series is about to get a new main entry, and it is coming soon. Borderlands 3 has been rumoured for a long time. After the release of Borderlands 2 in 2012, Gearbox followed up the chartbuster sequel with a pre-sequel in 2014. But fans never stopped craving for a proper sequel to Borderlands 2- an aftermath which would take place during a time when Handsome Jack is no more.
It is no wonder, then, that fans have been incessantly questioning about the possible Borderlands 3 release date. Whispers started doing the rounds as early as after the release of Borderlands 2, but they only solidified enough to be taken seriously after the release of the 2014 game developed by 2K Australia in collaboration with Gearbox. The developers, in a rather unique manner, managed to add to the frenzy of the rumours every time they were asked about the subject of a possible new main addition to the series without actually letting out anything substantial. Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford notably stated in early 2014 that the studio was not thinking about a new Borderlands game, as a new entry will require to be massive in scale in order to be able to match up to the success of the previous games.
However, by the time 2015 rolled around, Pitchford confirmed to the relief of thousands of fans around the world that a new Borderlands game was indeed in the works, and that it was going to be the biggest yet in the critically acclaimed franchise. They did not reveal much further though, but we do understand the pressure lurking on the creators’ head to deliver something that would not only match up to its predecessors but actually surpass them. But the good news was that they had started hiring for the game.
By 2016, Pitchford noted that their team had already started working on the next Borderlands game and that it would be the next game to launch after Battleborn. However, the studio head left a few questions lurking in fans’ minds- would the game actually be called Borderlands 3? What if, indeed, it was called something else, like Borderlands 4? This even makes sense coming to think of the fact that there already are three existing main entries in the series.
But what’s in a name? The important thing was that Gearbox was preparing for a new Borderlands game, which, fans expect, would be nothing short of stellar. And while details about the upcoming title have been few and far between, we have been rewarded with a few snippets of information now and then. These include some vague insights into the story and its links with its predecessors by way of a new character who is the son of a fan favourite from the earlier games.
But while 2016 was low on information about Borderlands 3, the new year has brought in a wealth of news. Pitchford made some significant announcements at the 2017 Game Developers Conference that not only suggested that the studio was making great progress with Borderlands 3, but also allowed us a glimpse at what could arguably be scenes from the upcoming game. Pitchford demonstrated a new technology that was being created with the Unreal Engine 4 for a future Borderlands game with the help of some footage which he insisted was not from the actual game. However, we couldn’t help but notice how similar the sceneries and even the sole character that was shown resembled the older games. Sadly, though, he did not say anything about when we could expect to see the game.
So yes, it is true that we still do not know the possible Borderlands 3 release date, but going by the recent developments, we think it is safe to assume that we could see more of the new game in the coming months.
